Burglar-Proof Doors: Security for Your Home
An intruder-resistant front door is an investment that pays off. Burglars are deliberate in their actions and look for weak points in a house – usually entrance doors, patio doors, or windows. Time is almost always the decisive factor: anyone who cannot gain access within a few minutes usually gives up because the risk of detection becomes too great. This is exactly where good security technology comes in – and prevents a large proportion of attempted burglaries before they succeed.
Preventing Burglaries Effectively: Six Important Tips
These measures effectively protect your home and valuables: For front doors and side entrance doors, rely on tested quality and professional installation. Always fully lock the door when leaving the house, don't just pull it shut. If a key is lost, replace the cylinder lock immediately. Never hide keys outside – experienced criminals know every hiding place. Do not leave the key in the lock from the inside, especially with doors that have a glass insert. And don't open the door to every stranger: a peephole, camera, and security chain further increase security.
Pay Attention to the DIN Standard
When buying a new door, it is recommended to choose only burglar-resistant models according to DIN EN 1627. This standard specifies how long a door can withstand an attempted burglary using certain tools. The classification is made in so-called resistance classes, abbreviated RC (for "Resistance Class"). For residential buildings, at least RC 2 is recommended. For this, a front door should, among other things, have a profile cylinder with drill protection, a security rosette on the outside, a multi-point hook locking system, safety glass of the appropriate class, as well as additional protection on hinges, frame, door leaf, and door frame.
To ensure that security is not just on paper, doors should be tested by recognized, certified testing bodies. When purchasing, look for corresponding test certificates.
Overview of Resistance Classes
The standard knows several resistance classes. The lowest offers hardly any significant protection, while the highest classes are reserved for special high-security areas. For normal residential buildings, RC 2 is usually sufficient: this class can withstand an attempted burglary with simple tools for a few minutes – often enough for the perpetrator to give up. RC 3 offers a longer resistance time but is more expensive and particularly useful if there is a very high risk or if valuable assets need to be protected.
How Much Do Burglar-Proof Doors Cost?
A flat price can hardly be named, as the costs depend on many factors: the structural conditions, the desired security elements, and the local installation costs. Our burglar-resistant aluminum front doors already offer a high level of security in their basic configuration at a fair price-performance ratio. Additional security features can be added depending on the model – just contact us.
Check Funding and Tax Benefits
For increased security in your home, various funding opportunities are available depending on the current situation – for example, as part of age-appropriate renovations or through individual state programs. If you also improve the energy efficiency of your door, you may also benefit from tax advantages for renovation measures. Since programs and conditions change regularly, it is best to inquire about the current status with the relevant authorities before purchasing.
Can I Make an Existing Door More Secure?
Retrofitting is generally possible, but not always sensible. Depending on the age and condition of the door, there may be so many weak points that not all of them can be remedied satisfactorily. You can retrofit, for example, security strike plates, a sturdy mortise lock with a high-quality cylinder, security fittings, as well as supplementary security bars or additional locks. If all measures are added up, a completely new, tested door is often the more economical and secure solution in the end. A cost comparison is worthwhile here.
